Alexander Lojko

University of Michigan, Ph.D Candidate

I'm a Climate & Meteorology PhD student looking at how North American thunderstorms enhance European weather extremes! Click here to take a look at my CV.

    The Questions I am Answering:
  • Which processes cause North American thunderstorms to influence European weather?
  • How well are these processes represented in current-generation weather models?
  • What is the implication of this influence for forecast data users?

Interests

  • Mid-Latitude Atmospheric Dynamics

Recent Projects

Here are some recent projects that I have worked on.

Negative Potential Vorticity Tracker

Developed an algorithm for temporally tracking air arising from thunderstorm updrafts (Ongoing work). Figure plotted at 10 hour intervals.

Rotational Wind Error Diagnostics

Assessed the manifestation and advection of upper-level wind forecast error arising from thunderstorms. The work has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.

Green Infrastructure Suitability Assessment

Collaborated with local government and graduate students on a Geographical Information Systems project to inform new green infrastructure development in Washtenaw County. Assigned priority values based on climate and census data.
